世卫表示，利用艾滋病病毒自检工具，人们可以在私密和方便环境中使用唾液或指血等进行检测，在20分钟或更短时间内就可获得结果。世卫指出，这类自检工具目前在美国和英国的药店或网络渠道的售价在25美元至40美元间，但在非洲南部一些试点国家，通过与生产商援助合作的形式，自检工具的价格已降至3美元。

世卫组织总干事陈冯富珍表示，数以百万计的艾滋病病毒感染者正在错失挽救自身生命、防止病毒传播的疗法。艾滋病病毒自检应向更多的人敞开大门，让他们了解自己的艾滋病病毒感染情况，并了解如何获得治疗和预防服务。

世卫组织表示，在2005年至2015年间，全球艾滋病病毒感染者中知晓自身感染情况的比例从12%升至60%，其中男性接受病毒检测的概率相对较低。此外，有男男性行为者、性工作者、变性人、注射毒品者和囚犯是艾滋病病毒感染的“重点人群”，每年全世界190万新增成人艾滋病病毒感染者中重点人群占了44%，但这一人群的艾滋病病毒检测率仍较低。

统计数据显示，在艾滋病病毒感染者的伴侣中，艾滋病病毒检测呈阳性的比例可高达70%，但这些人中目前还有很大一部分并未进行病毒检测。世卫新指南提出，应鼓励艾滋病病毒感染者将自身状况告知其伴侣，让他们接受艾滋病病毒检测。
