除了让交易更加方便之外，韩国中国中央银行取消硬币的另一个目的是为了削减成本。该行每年要投入超过4000万美元铸造硬币，硬币的收集、管理和流通也要付出成本。

全球范围而言，北欧国家是目前最接近“无现金社会”的地方。瑞典的1600个银行网点中一半以上既不持有现金也不接受现金存款，挪威最大的银行DNB今年也呼吁停止使用纸币。
