左撇子其实只是更习惯于用左手，其他方面与常人无异。不过正是因为习惯用左手，在日常生活中难免会遇到一些小烦恼，很多生活用品都是为右手设计的，左撇子用起来会感觉到别扭，比如智能手机的向右滑动解锁功能。还有就是在开车时，左撇子的操作体验也会有所影响。

早些年还有传言称，左撇子更加聪明，其实这种说法是没有科学依据的。因为大脑对手的控制是交叉的，左撇子意味着右脑（形象具象如音体美空间想象）思维比较好，左脑（抽象如逻辑推理语言）思维比较差，而一般人恰恰相反。所以会给人一种左撇子和一般人不大一样的感觉。

关于左撇子这个节日的由来，还要追溯到上个世纪七十年代。1975年8月13日，美国堪萨斯州托佩卡市的一群左撇子建立了名叫左撇子国际的组织，他们设想把全世界的左撇子联合起来，共同争取左撇子的权益。一年后，该组织举行庆祝活动，并将这一天确定为国际左撇子日。如今，全世界已有几十个国家的左撇子组织庆祝这一节日。
