中国青年报·中青在线记者从多个信息源处独家获悉，酿成这一18名矿工惨死、37人在医院接受救治（9人重伤）的重大事故，是源于与吉林桥煤矿相邻的石等下煤矿附近一个非法的废旧金属回收冶炼厂，在生产过程中将有毒有害气体直接排入石等下煤矿废弃矿井内，造成有毒有害气体进入吉林桥煤矿矿井内，导致井下作业人员中毒。目前，该非法冶炼厂数名股东已被抓获，大股东在逃。
5月7日上午11时左右，湖南省株洲市攸县黄丰桥镇吉林桥煤矿井下发生一起气体中毒事故，目前已造成18人死亡、37人受伤。这起事故发生在煤矿全面安全“体检”之际。湖南省有关部门在调查了解到，吉林桥煤矿证照齐全，产能21万吨，与其相邻的石等下煤矿（2014年10月已关闭）附近一个非法的废旧金属回收冶炼厂，从各地收来大量废旧电视机、电脑等，通过高温烧掉塑料件提取其中的金、铜等金属以图赚钱。该厂人员为躲避环保监管，把关闭后的石等下煤矿变成了非法的废旧金属回收冶炼点，并擅自打开密闭井口，将有毒有害气体偷偷排放到巷道内。废矿与吉林桥矿中间因采空而多处连通，而吉林桥矿生产中必须往外排风以保证井下空气正常，结果致使废矿中的废气毒气大量进入吉林桥矿，导致这一惨剧发生。
在今天召开的全省安全生产紧急电视电话会议上，湖南省政府领导指出，要继续深入安全生产大排查大管控大整治“三大行动”，要严格落实煤矿驻矿盯守制度，对于搞形式、走过场、敷衍塞责的单位和个人，要从严追究有关责任人和单位负责人的责任；并强调要对已关闭的煤矿进行“回头看”，全面检查井筒密闭、设备设施拆除等情况，坚决落实关闭措施；对再生资源回收、废旧金属回收等行业领域存在的死角盲区，按照“三个必须”的要求明确安全监管责任，部署开展专项整治。
中国青年报·中青在线记者获悉，当天株洲市召开市委常委会议，对攸县黄丰桥镇吉林桥煤矿中毒事故启动追责程序，对事故责任领导作出先期处理决定：攸县人民政府副县长王卓文等6名干部被免职。
