当日3时34分，卡特琳娜轮途经宁波象山海域时，二副艾伦在海面起雾、能见度极差、周边作业渔船密集且通航环境复杂的情况下，违反国际海上避碰规则的相关规定，瞭望疏忽，没有及时判断碰撞危险，未使用安全航速驾驶船舶，避让措施不当，导致卡特琳娜轮与“鲁荣渔58398”船发生碰撞。
“鲁荣渔58398”船失去联系的当天傍晚，宁波海事局就通过各种技术手段逐一核查事发时航经此水域的船舶，初步将肇事嫌疑目标锁定为马耳他籍散货船卡特琳娜轮。
2016年9月21日，浙江海警驻甬部队正式受理宁波海事局对卡特琳娜轮涉嫌犯罪的移交。
浙江海警驻甬部队侦查人员深入调查该案件，聘请专业翻译公司翻译从卡特琳娜轮船载航行数据记录仪（VDR）上调取的录音，查明事发时段船舶航行动态及驾驶台值班的相关情况。
通过对VDR中记录的语音的辨识证实，碰撞前，该船二副看见前方有一艘渔船；碰撞后，值班水手感到船体异常震动并询问二副，二副认为是正常转向造成，继续行驶。
从宁波海事局提取的航行轨迹图证实，2016年5月7日3时34分，卡特琳娜轮与“鲁荣渔58398”船空间位置重合。
2016年10月28日，卡特琳娜轮二副被刑事拘留，由于犯罪嫌疑人艾伦属菲律宾国籍，不懂中文，为保障犯罪嫌疑人合法权益，浙江海警部门专门聘请了一名英语翻译。据悉，该起案件将于近期宣判。
