参与实验的手机用户已被要求在三天内不使用任何个人护理产品，但研究者依然可以在手机屏上采集到抗炎药、抗真菌乳膏、防脱发药水、抗抑郁药、眼药水、各种内外服的东西。它们基本上都是用户日常用的。像柑橘、咖啡因、草药和香料等常见的食物分子也能检测出来，甚至几个月前使用的驱虫剂也能被查出。

医药学教授彼得·道瑞斯汀认为，人们身上所有的化学物质都能在物体上留下痕迹，因此可以根据日常用品上的化学痕迹推断一个人的生活方式。手机上的分子基本能告诉科学家，主人的日常生活是怎样的。比如，可以判断用户是女性还是男性，是否使用高端彩妆、染发、喜欢喝咖啡还是红酒、是否爱吃辣、是否正在治疗抑郁症、日常擦哪种防晒霜、是否喜欢户外活动等。所有的信息都能被用来缩小搜查手机用户的范围。

研究者们表示，这种对物品化学痕迹进行质谱分析的新方法潜在用途广阔，尤其在犯罪调查领域。想象一下，在犯罪现场，警察只找到一部私人手机，然而它上面却没有留下任何指纹或DNA信息，无法在数据库中找到对应记录，因此无法找到物品的所有者，也无法断案。但有了这个新方法，确定目标人物的范围就不那么困难了。

该团队预备进行更大规模的调查实验，将分子质谱分析的方法应用到其它生活物品中去，比如钱包和钥匙等。技术成熟后，有望被应用于医药学、环境研究、机场安检或临床依从性监测等方面。医生可以及时知晓病人是否按处方服药或从皮肤代谢中分析出患者是否接触过有害物质等。
