根据他的介绍，斯诺登是自学成才的系统管理员，他是网络专家，并且还是一位虔诚的基督徒，每周要去教堂2到3次，但也常访问撒旦教徒和无神论者的论坛，目的是了解其他人的信仰以及他们为什么相信这些。他高中毕业之后去了一所基督教大学，但只上了一年就退学，然后作为一名语言专家入伍。随后他被分配到NSA，当时他的计算机水平还很一般。于是他开始自学计算机，学习使用Wireshark抓包分析流量。随着他工作经验的日渐丰富，他本人也逐渐成为一名合格的网络专家，擅长网络分析和重路由。

在一般人眼里，数字世界一片祥和，似乎风平浪静。然而在他眼里，看似平静的水面却到处暗流涌动，普通人上网基本上就是在暗流中“裸泳”，没什么人使用Tor和Signal，普通用户常用的那些工具绝大多数黑客都能轻松搞定。
