2002年，Reid Hoffman在自家客厅里与合作伙伴共同创建了领英，2003年5月5日，网站正式上线。LinkedIn在中国还开发了基于真实身份的职场社交App“赤兔”。

微软方面表示，将以每股196美元的价格收购领英，在收购之后将会继续保留LinkedIn品牌、文化和独立性，双方预计这笔交易将会在今年年底之前完成。

目前，公司首席执行官由Jeff Weiner担任。总部坐落于美国加州硅谷，LinkedIn公司在全球27个城市设立了分部及办事处。在本次收购之后，原LinkedIn CEO杰夫·韦勒(Jeff Weiner)仍保留CEO职位，并向微软CEO萨提亚·纳德拉汇报工作。
