考古学家估计，该军营隶属于禁卫军，建于公元2世纪，当时正是古罗马“五贤帝”之一哈德良皇帝执政时期 。古罗马禁卫军最早是由第一任皇帝奥古斯都组建，负责保卫皇帝和皇宫的安全。公元前2世纪，曾作为贴身护卫服侍过凯撒大帝及马克·安东尼将军。禁卫军曾一度发展壮大，后于公元312年被君士坦丁大帝解散。公元3世纪，罗马修建奥勒良城墙后，军营随即被废弃。

“此次发现的军营遗址保存完整度和规模都非常罕见。”文化部官员代表任芮亚（Rossella Rea）说，“更重要的是现在发现的军营遗址只是周边四个古罗马军营的一部分。因此，可以凭新军营遗迹断定该处是一个军事区。”
