5月18日上午，兴化市公安局交警大队负责人获知张际勇未回家的信息后，迅速启动人员查找、原因调查、亲人接待安抚等工作。
5月20日下午1时许，根据群众报警，警方在城区华丰城市花园小区东侧的南官河边发现张的尸体并打捞出水。
