中华鲟作为地球上最古老的脊椎动物，距今有一亿四千万年的历史，和恐龙属于同一时期物种，现为国家一级保护动物，因其珍贵价值，被誉为“水中大熊猫”。
中国水产科学研究院长江水产研究所研究员危起伟告诉记者，渔业代表着长江生态最重要的一个环节，仅靠季节性修复难以恢复遭受重创的渔业资源。他说，长江流域的渔业资源是中国淡水渔业摇篮，长江流域是中国主要养殖鱼类的原产地，但是现在都面临总量、种类下降问题。其中，中华鲟属于濒危鱼种，专业机构监测显示，野生中华鲟自然产卵锐减。
当日，农业部在武汉召开会议，专题部署长江流域水生生物保护区全面禁捕工作，切实加强长江水生生物资源和水域生态环境保护。据悉，今年中国首次统一禁渔时间，从3月1日零时起至6月30日24时止。武汉禁渔范围自长江武汉开发区（汉南区）新河口以下至新洲区举水河口江段及通江支流，汉江蔡甸区谢八家以下至汉阳区南岸嘴江段。
