　　2016年11月，中国现有的唯一航母辽宁舰及其编队正出发展开远海训练，其中包括在海南岛三亚附近进行短暂停留。

　　报道称，辽宁舰航母战斗群由多艘中国海军驱逐舰、护卫舰和轻型护卫舰组成。同时，辽宁舰还搭载了10多架歼-15“飞鲨”舰载机以及多架直-9和直-18舰载直升机，其中包括至少两架直-18J空中预警机。

　　此外，报道称，改装辽宁舰的大连造船厂正在建造中国第二艘航母。这艘001A型航母大致与辽宁舰相似，仍保留着滑跃式飞行甲板，但飞行甲板的布局重新进行了调整，而且其他地方也进行了一些改动。
