这一牛肉加工作坊位于盐城市亭湖区青年路某驾校附近。据盐务部门有关人员介绍，秋冬季节是牛肉加工销售旺季，但是在一、两个月前却发现该作坊的用盐量反而下降，经过公安、盐务人员蹲守、调查，确认该作坊存在作假疑点，并于19日凌晨突击进行了检查。
检查组告诉现代快报记者，该作坊处于盐城城郊结合部，现场环境脏乱不堪，共查获用于制作假冒牛肉的原料、半成品和成品20多吨。据作坊主交代，这些用于假冒牛肉的猪肉是从河南商丘和江苏昆山购进的，加工时，用工业盐和食品添加剂焦糖色把猪肉腌制染色，再放入牛肉汤中煮制一下，猪肉摇身一变成了高价位的牛肉。
