报道称，隧道通过只需要10分钟，每日通行车辆将达到4000至5000辆，而现在仅有1500辆左右。
据官方的新华社报道，甘孜藏族自治州现有的40公里长的险峻的山区公路贯穿需要两小时，而且伴随着雪崩和坠石的危险，更不用说极度寒冷的气候和极低的氧气水平。
这一项目的总工程师姚志军说：“这是中国铁路总公司有史以来修建难度最高的隧道。”
报道称，建于1951年的川藏公路是中国在西藏修建的第一条公路，目前该地区有两条主要公路，青藏公路和川藏公路。
