奥地利人民维也纳航空公司开通了瑞士圣加伦阿尔滕莱茵机场(St Gallen-Altenrhein)与德国肺特烈港(Friedrichshafen)之间的航线，两地被博登湖相隔，以往两地通行需要靠陆路运输和船舶运输，开车需要1个半小时左右，开通了这条航线后，两地之间通行只需要8分钟。

不过环保人士对此表示抗议，认为飞机的二氧化碳排放量太大，完全没有必要这样做，希望政府禁止。但航空公司表示，开通新航线后乘客可以更方便的通过肺特烈转机飞往其他欧洲大城市。

在此之前，全球全球最短的国际航线为加勒比区的安格拉岛至圣马丁岛，飞行时间为10分钟。
