位于北京京郊的八达岭、山海关等地的长城虽然雄伟壮丽，但已不是原状。只有广武明长城未经过人工修复，却保持了历史原貌，所以，北京曾把这段长城作为修复京郊长城的依据。据当地人介绍，近年来，也曾有过一定的维修，但是效果并不明显。
据当地学者表示，对长城的破坏主要来自：长期风雨侵蚀，造成长城自然损毁；多年来沿边村民耕地建房直接从长城扒砖取土，道路截断穿行墙体；旅游开发和破坏性修复很多关口原始风貌消失，还有就是多地的矿山、采石场私挖滥采，对长城和当地生态造成了毁灭性破坏。（记者岳旭辉朔州台记者崔小林）
