  据美国《大众科学》月刊网站8月9日刊登题为《中国组合动力航天飞机可能重置21世纪太空竞赛》的报道称,中国航天科技集团公司(CASTC)将开始研发一种高技术的飞行器,这种飞行器比已经退休的航天飞机更高效,它使用多种动力,能从普通机场起飞,并直线飞入轨道。这种组合动力航天飞机的组合循环发动机将利用涡轮扇发动机或涡轮喷气发动机让飞行器从飞机跑道上水平起飞。一旦来到空中,就会转而使用冲压发动机。随着速度增加,又调整为超音速燃烧冲压式喷气发动机。在超音速燃烧冲压式喷气发动机阶段,该组合动力航天飞机将在“近太空”处进入极超音速飞行。“近太空”位于海平面以上20-100公里处。最后,该航天飞机将利用它的火箭发动机飞出“近太空”,进入轨道。
