根据马瑟利表示，他所使用的软件是基于“ping”指令查找全球的IP分布。大多数情况下这些IP都分配给了路由器、网站服务器一类的网关设备，但少数情况下，移动设备也会对“ping”作出响应。

将互联网全部IP地址ping一遍需耗时5个小时，随后生成图谱则需要额外12个小时。
