据专家初步鉴定，张智林捡到的是一件青铜器文物，是战国绹纹乳钉青铜扁钟，属于礼器，应为国家二级以上文物。扁钟呈深绿色，有些许锈迹，距今已有2000余年历史，但整体外观完整。

在确定青铜扁钟的真实身份后,吉首市根据《中华人民共和国文物法》相关规定,对张智林主动上交文物和保护文物的行为进行2万元奖励。

专家对此表示，此次出土的青铜器和历年周边地区发现的青铜器特点，进一步佐证了在该地区在同历史时期发生过战争或是有驻军存在。目前,该扁钟已被吉首市文物局收藏，等待专家的进一步鉴定。
