薛金林一个月大时，被陈良乡的亲生父母送到新沟镇，跟着养父母生活。22岁时，她嫁给宗潮，第二年，公公得了帕金森病，生活不能自理。
夫妻俩辛苦拉扯着整个家庭：宗潮在苏州、无锡等地安装空调；她去附近的内衣厂打工，从早上7点干到晚上7点。
董娟远嫁盐城，除了姐姐举目无亲，但大家都觉得她有股北方姑娘的爽利劲儿，把家里大小事情料理得妥妥当当。
“她是个很好的孩子，体贴丈夫，从不和公婆置气。”她的嫂子评价她。
