据《南方日报》3月25日消息，刘小华于当日被免去湛江市委书记、常委、委员职务，亦不再担任湛江市人大常委会主任。
据财新网报道，告别湛江后，刘小华即出任广东省委副秘书长一职。
值得一提的是，刘小华卸任湛江市委书记的时间为今年3月25日。而在此前一天，也就是3月24日上午，广东省委原副秘书长、办公厅原主任刘可为被任命为宁夏回族自治区人民政府副主席。从时间点上来看，刘小华卸任湛江调任广东省委，或系补缺刘可为。
到今日曝出刘小华自杀身亡的消息，在不到3个月的时间里，广东省委副秘书长这一职务再一次出现空缺。
另据《湛江日报》报道，刘小华在3月25日的湛江市领导干部大会上告别说，我首先坚决拥护和服从省委的决定，感谢省委和省委组织部对我工作的肯定，真诚欢迎宏广同志到湛江来接任市委书记。特别要衷心感谢省委对我和我的家庭的亲切关怀，让我能够调回广州工作，更好地照顾患病的妻子，从而结束长达15年夫妻分居的生活。
官方简历显示，刘小华今年57岁，广东省兴宁市人，仕途经历也一直在广东。1978年，19岁的刘小华考入中山大学中文系。四年后，他进入广东省委调查部六处，成为一名科员。随后，他先后在广东省国家安全厅、广东省委办公厅任职。
2002年，刘小华从广东省委办公厅综合督查处处长调任河源市委常委，分管政法工作，由此成长为厅级干部。2007年，他升任河源市市长。4年后，刘小华调任湛江市委书记。
