谷歌周一表示，其自动驾驶汽车技术的测试工作已取得重大进展。截至目前，谷歌自动驾驶汽车已完成70万英里的驾驶测试，其中不仅包括了无交通灯的高速公路驾驶测试，还包括了大量地面情况更为复杂的郊区街道驾驶测试。

谷歌今日还放出一段YouTube视频来展示公司自动驾驶汽车技术的进展成效。目前这项技术已能够自动识别如下的路面情况：骑自行车者给出的要穿越交通的信号、铁路交叉口的警示信号、停靠车辆的一部分突出并阻挡部分行驶道、多个行人和骑自行车者进入某个十字路口、用橙色交通锥标示的施工区域等等。

“在市区里行驶一英里路程要远比在高速公路上更为复杂，因为前者在一个小的区域中会因为规则的不同存在数百种不同的路面情况。”Chris Urmson指出，“我们改进了我们的软件，因此它现在可以实时的区别上百个不同物体——如行人、公共汽车、由协管员手握的停车标志，或者是骑自行车者给出的要通过马路的手势信号等。自动驾驶汽车通常能以人类做不到的方式同时注意到上述所有路面状况，而且它永远也不会分心或者感觉到累。”

“我们仍然有大量问题尚待解决，譬如让自动驾驶汽车在山景城完成更多的街区驾驶后，再前往另外一个城市进行下一阶段的测试。不过两年前严重困扰我们的大量街区驾驶路况问题，自动驾驶汽车现在已经能自行处理了。”谷歌无人驾驶汽车技术项目开发总监Urmson表示。
