许鑫所在部队驻扎在祖国西北茫茫戈壁，管辖着一条任何版本的地图上都无法找到的神秘铁路。从火车司机、列车员到养路工，全部清一色由军人担任。我国第一颗人造地球卫星、第一枚洲际导弹、神舟飞船、长征火箭等，都是通过这条铁路运抵发射场，飞向浩瀚太空。

多年前的一次经历，让许鑫刻骨铭心——三连四排一名上等兵不慎滑倒，造成颅脑损伤，生命危在旦夕。接到电话，他急匆匆赶到点号，紧急包扎、输液之后，又用床板把战士抬到十几公里外的公路口，等待驻地医院的救护车……
从那以后，许鑫想方设法改善点号医疗条件。在他建议下，部队给每个点号配发了药品箱、电磁谱治疗仪、按摩垫等设备，还在列车上设立“流动诊所”，定期为所有点号的战士进行医疗巡诊、心理疏导、健康教育……
2008年初，许鑫遭遇人生中的重大变故——已过不惑之年的他被查出肝脏占位病变，后经医院被确诊为肝癌！
面对晴天霹雳，许鑫坚强地挺了过来。手术后仅仅40天，他又穿上白大褂，奇迹般地登上“流动诊所”，出现在点号战士面前。
出发前，他告诉妻子：“躺在病床上，总会想起点号战士的手。都是年轻的小伙子啊，双手就像老人一样，想着就让人心疼……”
得知爸爸带病工作的事，在内地上大学的儿子打来电话劝他：“您不要太累了，要不早点退休吧，我来挣钱养家！”
