大众点评由张涛于2003年4月创立，此前曾获得4轮融资。2006年1月，首轮融资，投资方为红杉资本。2007年5月，B轮融资，投资方为Google。2011年，C轮获得挚信资本、红杉资本、启明创投、光速创投四家联合1亿美元投资。2012年获得红杉资本等多家投资方D轮融资。

据悉，之所以接受腾讯入股，大众点评主要是看好腾讯提供的资源支持。入股完成后，大众点评将接入腾讯支付体系、电商体系，入驻微信和QQ等平台。

大众点评CEO张涛在2014年公司年会上演讲时透露，2014大众点评的战略将更加激进，团购业务全面进攻三四线城市，在线预订业务目标是较2013年翻10倍，达到日均5万单，成为全世界最大的拥有餐厅在线预订的公司。
