知情人士透露，安小予被调查的时间大致在12月11日。其涉案原因，与其长期分管的四川大学基建、后勤业务有关，亦与四川大学新校区建设有涉。
四川大学自2002年起实施规模庞大的“江安校区”建设工程。该校区位于成都市双流县航空港经济开发区，占地3000余亩，投资逾26亿元。安小予即是该工程的主要负责人之一。而早在今年9月，四川省纪委一位主要领导即在其报告中提及，纪检部门收到了反映教育部直属高校的个别领导在新校区建设中涉嫌贪腐的举报。
对于安小予之被调查，教育部办公厅副主任、新闻发言人续梅在接受21世纪经济报道记者问询时表示，她还没有听说此事。
安小予，1953年12月生，河北人。1969年2月参加工作，大学文化程度。曾任四川大学校长助理、规划建设处处长、新校区建设指挥部副指挥长。2004年11月，安小予参加了当时的四川大学副校长公开竞聘。他在竞聘中承诺要为四川大学教师建设3000套住房，不过他那次未能当选。
直至2009年9月，安小予才当选四川大学副校长，并继续分管基建、后勤工作，也包括校友会等，直到案发。
安小予所在的四川大学由原四川大学、原成都科技大学、原华西医科大学三所全国重点大学合并而成，为75所教育部直属高校之一，亦是“985工程”和“211工程”重点建设高校。在全国大学排名榜上居前20位。
多位教育部官员对21世纪经济报道记者表示，类似四川大学等教育部直属高校，对于其副校长级以上领导的监管权限，一般在中央纪委驻教育部纪检组。而后者相对于教育部的其他行政系统而言，“比较独立”。
有教育系统官员称，目前全国各所高校中，副校级及以上领导动辄以十人计，如四川大学副校级及以上领导即有13人之多，监管难度可想而知。
今年以来，全国高校系统被调查的官员人数较多。仅四川地区的高校中，即有四川护理职业学院(四川省卫生学校)校长邹世凌、四川理工学院院长曾黄麟、成都中医药大学校长范昕建、党委书记张忠元等人先后“落马”，而且案情大多涉及学校后勤、基建事由。
