　　通报称，张家口市下花园北魏石窟位于鸡鸣山南麓山脚下，南顺山势临洋河，夹在下花园火车站货场的北二条主运线南与专用线中间，石窟地面位于岩坑下五六米处。1909年京张铁路建成通车时，将石窟保留了下来。

　　通报说，下花园区对于这一珍贵历史文物非常重视，多年来一直对石窟进行封闭式保护。1988年，省、市、区文物部门对石窟进行了抢救性清理，清除了窟内淤泥，并在洞窟周围砌了高墙，在其北面修了台阶，直通窟室，为管理和保护提供了便利，而且区文物部门常年对石窟进行清扫维护。

　　据下花园区文广新局相关负责人介绍，石窟附近曾经是铁路部门的货运煤台，但该煤台已多年弃之不用，余煤早已清运完毕。由于石窟处在铁轨下方的一个岩坑内，是一座单窟，遇风沙天气容易将煤台地表残留的煤尘连同风沙一起吹进石窟，致使石佛表面覆盖了一层浮尘。
