“那年我13岁，跟着田汉先生和省湘剧训练班的小演员们去北京汇报演出，在怀仁堂，我们躲在幕布后面偷偷地看到了毛主席端坐台下看戏。”亲眼看到共和国伟大的领袖，让少年时的左大玢激动不已。

　　1959年，毛主席回湖南，16岁的左大玢在湘剧界已小有名气，在原来的省交际处(现在的长沙市湘江宾馆)演《生死牌》。演出后的舞会上，毛主席的摄影师侯波邀请左大玢陪毛主席跳支舞。
