下午4时20分，李克强在熙和门外迎接辛格，两国总理同乘一辆电瓶车来到太和门广场，下车后沿着故宫中轴线走上内金水桥。夕阳余辉中，红墙黄瓦的皇城宫殿显得金碧辉煌。面对雄浑大气的午门城楼，背朝着典雅庄重的太和门，两国总理的手握在了一起。李克强说，我们的背后是中华文明，而辛格总理代表的是印度文明，我和辛格总理这次握手象征着两大文明的握手。辛格微笑着点头赞许，对故宫气势恢宏的建筑表示赞叹。两国总理的手握得更紧了。
正在故宫参观的中国游客聚拢在内金水桥边，向中印两国总理欢呼问候。两国总理向大家挥手致意，走到人群中同大家亲切握手、攀谈，现场洋溢着中印友好的热烈气氛。
