向家坝水电站首批机组计划于今年１０月发电。下游围堰拆除是电站蓄水发电前的一个重要节点。
据介绍，向家坝二期下游围堰是用于挡水，保护向家坝二期厂坝工程建设的设施。整个围堰拆除开挖量约为９５．５万立方米，工程需历时近１个月。
向家坝水电站于２００４年７月开始筹建，计划安装８台８０万千瓦发电机组，单机容量超过三峡的７０万千瓦，是目前世界单机容量最大的水轮发电机。
